Ski Utah unveils logo

Thursday, 12 April 2007 @ 9:10

As part of their pre-state-of-the-season address, Nathan Rafferty of Ski Utah unveiled a new logo and website. Reporting another record ski season for 2006-2007, he the follows with details of how it will likely be “among the top three all-time highs&heillip; and could possibly be a record.”

Regarding the logo, he continues:

We were looking for something fresh. We just felt we turned the corner with the 4 million record, and we decided to try for a new logo. We wanted something clean, cool and simple. The old logo simply didn’t portray the message we wanted. … It was a particularly tough job because we wanted a mountain in the logo. One of the designers rode TRAX into work one day and counted 37 different logos, all with mountains.”

Does anyone know who did the rebrand?

Not sure who did it - but I really like it. Very Utah. Has a cool modern feel to it as well. The image is a little fuzzy - but I think I like the typeface too.

The logo mark is really cool. It might be hard to use the entire logo with the tag line though. I deal with a lot of logos for everything that I do (conference guides, PPT, etc) and rectangular logos are always the best to work with since they always seem to fix. This is a little square, and a little tall with a tag line that would be totally lost if small.

You can view a horizontal (rectangular) version in the masthead on their website. Yeah, sorry the image is a little fuzzy; that is the best version I could find.

I like it! And yes we do have the greatest snow on Earth. We rival the Himalayas on many levels.

I agree pretty nice, could be a lot worse for being a state run project.
However I would like to have seen it before it was sku-ed to look like it’s on a ball or something. Looks to me the mark is strong enough with out having to do that to it.

I agree with folco - I want to see the logo sans 3d effect. I generally like the logo - the concept is great. It’s just the execution that has me kind of scratching my head. Why “balloon” it out and make it look like it’s stretched out over a round object? What was the design decision behind that?

When I heard that the logo was redone I was a little worried about what it would look like but I am very impressed by it. I think it represents Utah and the ski industry very well. I don’t mind the 3d effect at all, I think it adds to it and makes it a little bolder, like it’s coming out at you. Maybe if I saw it the other way my opinion would change.
Does anyone know who designed it?

The effect is refreshing to me. I’ve seen it before, yes, but in every treatment of the Utah snowflake it’s always been flat. So while a flat snowflake might be more formal or traditional it gives me no incentive to look at it. The strongest push in design is fighting amongst a trillion other voices all yelling to look at me and this treatment of the logo, for me personally anyway, got my attention.

I like it. The logo works best with a white background. The blue background on the website makes the snow capped mountain have a blue slushy capped mountain.

nice idea - a cool take on using perspective. But I’m a believer in that old rule that a good logo can be dropped to black & white & still hold its own. This logo feels a little to close to all those 3d balls and swishs that plagued the late nineties.

I agree with you fubbs; a good mark should be a simple graphic and not an illustration. I am also a firm believer in the black-and-white-test requirement and always decipline myself to abstain from color when developing a new logo until it is complete. I’m alright with this for the most part however; it works.

My only critique would be the slogan: it is much too small and the placement is awkward. I am willing to bet that the version of the logo here is larger then most applications will be and the slogan is barely legible.

Still looks fine to me. I would relate this style to other well done perspective type logos like Silverpops:
