Oh yea! I am totally going to this (assuming no emergencies come up).
This was cool to see their new machine, as well as eat some sweet tasty pork with Wade.
Oooo… the pork!
Dah! I saw this a day too late :(
Are you subscribed to the RSS feed?
I’m embarassed to say I don’t really know what one is. So…um…no.
No sweat. RSS (really simply syndication) is a content feed that you can subscribe to. Many websites, blogs, and news services offer feeds of news headlines or even full articles. You subscribe to the feeds with an application called an RSS aggregator which manages all of your feeds, checks the servers periodicaly for updates, and allows you to browse and read the content. This is a very effective way for staying on top of news and for browsing a large amount of information very quickly as it is delivered to you in one place in a uniform format, opposed to you having to go out and check several websites. Most aggregators are similar to email clients and allow you to read news items in a similar format to reading email messages. The most all web browsers have RSS aggregation features and many email clients do also, but I personally would recommend a RSS-specific application such as NetNewsWire (the “lite” version is free), as it will have a much more usable interface and will allow you to navigate and digest the content much faster and effectively. If you’re using a Macintosh, you might find an article that I wrote for the BYU Macintosh Users Group on subscribing to feeds useful. Drunkenblog also has a nice roundtable article discussing the features of the most popular aggregators for Mac.
Syndicated content is in my opinion one of the most useful tecnological developments to come out of the internet. There many other types of content that are syndicated besides news headlines as well, such as calendar events, photo galleries, and podcasts (iTunes, for example, is an example of an aggregator for podcasts).
UGAF provides four syndicated feeds: RSS for new posts to the discussion board, RSS for comments to posts, individual RSS feeds for each member’s posts, and our events calendar. You will find links to our RSS feeds in the footer of every page on this site. Or, if you are using Safari, you will notice a blue “RSS” badge on the right-hand side of the address bar.
Thanks for the rundown, Wade. Having heard OF them many times I sort of assumed they were something like that. I’ll have to follow your links and read up…
