New Utah Valley University Identity
Tuesday, 4 December 2007 @ 10:18Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members gathered in the Sorensen Student Centre’s Grande Ballroom on Friday, November 30 to witness the unveiling of a new family of logos to be associated with Utah Valley University. The logos consist of an institutional mark, seal and athletic marks.
Salt Lake City-based design firm Rare Method, the company chosen by the UVU Image Committee in June, designed the new logos.
Overall, the logos have been well received, and have only added to the general feeling of excitement for university status on campus.
UVSC will become Utah Valley University July 1, 2008.

Overall I like it although I’m not sure about the “faux” serif on the first U (1st image). And I also find the UV graphic (last graphic) - the top right part of the “V” doesn’t line up pleasingly with the “U” - the gray outline pokes in jarringly. It just jars my eye and seems to distract from the whole. I do like how the UV hints at a wolverine claw though.
I agree, Ben. It seems very strange to me that the first U would have the serif and the second wouldn’t.
To clear up the serif in the first u in UVU. If you look closely, the first U in the negative space, creates the shape of Utah, hence the need for the serif.
As far as the UV, I never noticed that before, but I think it was created that way to give it a little less structure and more of a animal claw like feel.
Okay that does make sense for the serif in the “u” - however it may be too clever for most of the viewing audience as obviously I didn’t see it until it was mentioned. However this can be turned into effective and good “word-of-mouth” marketing as people share with their friends the “hidden” meta design. I still don’t like the UV non-alignment. Perhaps if all the letter stems had the gray outline cut in “claw-like” it would work better to my eye. But again, the standard observer might not notice such details and I’m fairly confident that designers are not the primary target audience…
