Design our logo and win $200.00.
Sunday, 15 June 2008 @ 23:23Hello,
We are alpaca breeders in Utah and need a logo. We are on a sight called elogocontest.com and we are going to award $200.00 for the logo that we pick as the best to represent our company. Look for “Logo Design Contest for Acres Wild Alpacas”.
Please take a look and make a little bank.
Kindly,
Mary
Have you thought about how this could be construed using your business/organization in place of a logo designer?
“I’m holding an alpaca contest. Perhaps you could submit an alpaca? The owner of the best alpaca will win a free logo.”
What I’m suggesting is that logo design contests are not very professional and you would do a lot better to look at various designers work(s) and find one whose work best meets your needs and expectations and specifically hire them.
Otherwise you end up with a bunch of designers who work hard and get nothing (except the winner) and little to no recognition. It does not help the design industry, or the clients!
Good design comes from a meaningful relationship between the designer and key decision makers within a business. Together they come up with powerful solutions to business problems and the designer articulates that solution into a well-crafted design. Anything less then this and you do a disservice to your business and the design profession.
Please see http://www.no-spec.com/ for more reasons why contests and speculative work are bad both for businesses and designers.
This is all new to us as a small business and I feel as if I should apologize. You are right, it is frustrating trying to convey a concept and having the right type of designer make that concept a reality. I’m also finding that with the contest the people submitting are not very good designers. I don’t know design, but I have a good eye. Thank you for my 50 lashes with a wet noodle.
There are many excellent designers in this group. I am sure that you will be able to find someone that would be interested in designing a logo for you (myself included). Check out the members page as most have links to online portfolios.
Mary - don’t get too down on yourself! Chalk it up as a learning experience! You have a great resource right at your fingertips with this site! And if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask. A knowledgeable client is a better client!
I agree with Ben for once. ;)
I am actually looking to pic up some work, and would be interested in this project because of my strong passion for alpacas.
Seriously I am interested though.
Understand that this type of thing happens all the time and it’s kind of a hot-button issue with designers. Obviously, if it has an entire website dedicated to the topic, it’s a topic that has some serious opinions.
$200 is a lot of money to an Alpaca. Have one of them do it. They all have hoofs - correct, If you don’t have the dough, don’t make it any harder than it needs to be. I’ll do it for $500.
