Need business license?

Still newer to the area, I need advice on if I need to apply for business license in order to freelance in Salt Lake County.

I recently received a contract which asked if I had a business license. Do I need a business license? I work as a self employed, freelance Graphic Designer. I am a sole proprietor, no one works for me. I work primarily for other agencies and occasionally directly with clients. I work both on premises and in my home studio/office. So far, I’ve only been asked to provide agencies with a W-9 form.

I Googled and found information that seamed a bit conflicting: Page 12 of this pdf it lists businesses that must register. It does not mention Graphic or Web Design. But I also found this webpage which may suggest I need to.

I’ve lived and freelanced in 2 other states and Canada, two of which I was required to collect sales tax and had to register to charge, collect and pay the tax. I’ve never been required to obtain a business license. I’ve always just used my SSN or SIN.

Peer expertise and advice on this is greatly appreciated.

Business Insurance

It was recently suggested to me by an accountant that as a freelance designer, I should look into business liability insurance. I’m wondering what everyone else’s experience is for this– where would you even acquire such insurance, what would it cover, etc.?

Reputable Printers

Can any fellow designers out there recommend a good printer? I won’t mention any names but our usual guys has been botching jobs left and right. I would like to find someone locally who we can use consistently, with a good turn-around time and an eye for craftsmanship.

New Utah Valley University Identity

Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members gathered in the Sorensen Student Centre’s Grande Ballroom on Friday, November 30 to witness the unveiling of a new family of logos to be associated with Utah Valley University. The logos consist of an institutional mark, seal and athletic marks.

Salt Lake City-based design firm Rare Method, the company chosen by the UVU Image Committee in June, designed the new logos.

Overall, the logos have been well received, and have only added to the general feeling of excitement for university status on campus.

UVSC will become Utah Valley University July 1, 2008.

Guy Kawasaki to speak at SLCC

I thought that I would post a note about Guy Kawasaki coming to Utah to speak for those that haven’t heard yet. He will be here 1 November to speak at the Salt Lake Community College Jordan Campus.

Guy Kawasaki is the co-founder of Truemors and a managing director of Garage Technology Ventures. He is also a columnist for Entrepreneur Magazine. Previously, he was an Apple Fellow at Apple. Guy is the author of eight books including The Art of the Start, Rules for Revolutionaries, How to Drive Your Competition Crazy, Selling the Dream, and The Macintosh Way. He has a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA as well as an honorary doctorate from Babson College.

Guy’s speech empowers companies and individuals to innovate and change the world. He will explain the strategic steps to create new products by calling upon his experience with Apple, as a founder of several software companies, and a venture capitalist. This speech is for companies and individuals whose underlying purpose is to set new standards of innovation.”

This will be an exciting event as he has agreed to an open question and answer session afterwards, something that he rarely does. While not directly related to design, I have read some of his books and have benefited professionally from his ideas and experience.

Big Jump from Freelancer to Employer, Anyone else in the same boat??

Over the last year, I have decided to take my freelance work to the next level. We have hired several designers and I am no longer the lead creative, but instead a principal doing business negotiations all day long. It has been a difficult change. But a profitable one… Is anyone going through the same situation?

Staying organized

Hey artists and designers- let’s talk about organization. What are some of your methods or tricks in staying on top of things.

Specifically, how do you keep your email inbox clean? Do you divide into subfolders? Recently I’ve decided to delete at least 12 old emails daily in order to not have to spend a huge amount of time every to often cleaning it out.

What about saving files? When I am working on a project in the digital realm I find that after I am done I have a ton of files of different stages of the image, different file types, etc. What’s a better way?

What about the organization of files on your computer? Files seem to be all over the place on mine.

How about keeping track of clients, potential clients, projects, unpaid projects and so on?
